Presentation Preparation

Originally uploaded by homey98409

Geoff is diligently working to get his presentation prepared for the conference.

Has students that miss classes and then want to know what they missed
One of his students was already recording lectures
Other students wanted his materials
Decided to start recording himself
Some students need to go over materials multiple times in order to “get it”
Podcasting allowed students to do this on their own time
Students didn’t ask to have things repeated as much
This is where he saved time
Records everything whether it is good or bad
Doesn’t worry about it being perfect
Posts his podcasts on school web server
Uses a Sony voice recorder that saves as MP3 file
Sometimes uses Audacity (open source application)
Uses CamStudio to create video
Exports as .AVI or .SWF
Creates huge files
Converts to .SWF to reduce significantly
Shrink screen down to 800×600 for recording
Uses MP3 Tag software to add the ID3 tags to files
Uses DirCaster to feed directories
PHP based
Need to edit a settings file

Interesting session, but not very enlightening. The software itself is pretty straightforward (which is a good thing) but it doesn’t connect well with other Office applications (a bad thing) like Outlook. For example, it would be nice if the calendar function in Groove could synchronize or at least be able to import into Outlook.

It does a great job of allowing a user to simply create a shared space with other people who use Groove. I think you can share with others as long as you use a Groove server or some other web-based mechanism. In my humble opinion it would just be better to use a collaborative web based tool to begin with.
